Nowadays, unlike in the past, individuals have numerous methods to uphold every aspect of their personal hygiene.
Despite this, we are aware that many people opt not to care for theirs. Interestingly, several celebrities have been called out for having some quite unpleasant personal hygiene practices.
Not all these accusations hold water, naturally. However, some do, and how do we know? Because they have openly and willingly confessed to them.
So, which celebrities have admitted to having some dubious personal hygiene habits? Continue reading at your own risk.
Matthew McConaughey mentioned that he avoids using deodorant
Despite the advancements of humankind, one trait we've retained is body odor. While not all these scents are unpleasant, some are preferred over others. Many in our society would likely agree that the odor from the armpit is among the least pleasant. After all, the market for products that mask underarm odor — typically caused by scentless apocrine sweat mixing with normal bacteria on the skin's surface (via Harvard Health) — is vast and expected to grow even more in the next few years (via Fortune Business Insights).
However, not everyone subscribes to the notion that cleanliness means sweat-free and odor-free armpits, which means some people choose not to use antiperspirant or deodorant. One such individual is the actor, producer, author, and potential Texas gubernatorial candidate (via Bloomberg), Matthew McConaughey.
In a November 2020 podcast interview, McConaughey reaffirmed the rumor that he has already confirmed several times before: he avoids using deodorant (via Today). "As we've come to know, most deodorant's not good for you," McConaughey stated. Other celebrities who opt not to smell "like somebody else," as McConaughey puts it, include Cameron Diaz (via Screen Rant) and Bradley Cooper (via Esquire).
It seems Jennifer Lawrence might intentionally have bad breath before kissing scenes
Actor Liam Hemsworth has suggested that actress Jennifer Lawrence might take a playful approach to her oral hygiene, especially when preparing for a kissing scene with Hemsworth. This revelation came during a 2014 appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon," promoting the third installment of "The Hunger Games" series (via YouTube).
Hemsworth was responding to fan questions pre-asked on Twitter. One fan inquired about the most "awkward" scene to film in the franchise. Hemsworth didn't miss a beat, stating, "Anytime I had to kiss Jennifer was pretty uncomfortable."
"When you see it from the outside, it appears to be a perfect picture," Hemsworth elaborated. "She's one of my closest friends, I adore her, but whenever we had a kissing scene, she would intentionally eat garlic or tuna fish or something equally unpleasant."
Just before they began filming the scene, Lawrence would let Hemsworth know about the smelly food she had consumed and the fact that she hadn't brushed her teeth. "Wonderful," Hemsworth joked, "I can't wait to get in there and taste it!"
Jessica Simpson has candidly shared her aversion to brushing her teeth.
During a March 2010 I Heart Radio broadcast, singer, actress, and TV personality Jessica Simpson admitted she didn't follow the American Dental Association's recommendation of brushing teeth twice a day.
In fact, Simpson revealed she didn't even brush her teeth once a day. Instead, Simpson stated, "I don't brush my teeth." Period.
"No, really!" Simpson emphasized, explaining, "I just use Listerine — and sometimes I'll use my sweater" (via New York Magazine).
In the same year, perhaps to ensure everyone got the message, Simpson reiterated her lack of enthusiasm for dental hygiene. This time, she made her comments on an episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," slightly revising her earlier claim that she "never" brushes her teeth. According to Simpson, she brushes "maybe three times a week" (via YouTube and US Magazine).
Interestingly, this routine seemed to have no negative impact on the whiteness of her teeth or the freshness of her breath, at least according to Simpson's own opinion at the time. The most recent update we have, from a 2016 follow-up to a 2010 Fox News story, indicates that Simpson's stance on brushing her teeth had not changed.
Maria Bakalova transformed the art of smelling bad into a science
Nor would most of us want to go to such extremes. However, there must be a balance, perhaps somewhere between Howie Mandel's meticulousness and actress Maria Bakalova's approach. To prepare for her role as Tutar, Borat's daughter, in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm," Bakalova deliberately cultivated a strong body odor for authenticity, as she shared with Collider.
When Bakalova auditioned for the role, including two screen tests with Borat, or rather, Sacha Baron Cohen himself, the production team gave her clear instructions: "Don't be clean, don't prepare to look pretty or glamorous ... Try to avoid taking [a] shower."
At that point, Bakalova was busy filming another movie, so she couldn't follow that advice immediately — not until the shooting concluded. Until then, she created body odor using a repulsive concoction of banana peels, old eggs, vinegar, old olive oil, and onions.
Kesha's highly dubious hygiene routines
Eccentric pop star Kesha has some undeniably unusual hygiene practices, and she's quite open about discussing them publicly.
In fact, based on revelations from the biographical/autobiographical MTV documentary series about her life, aptly named "My Crazy Beautiful Life," it appears accurate to say that Kesha takes pride in navigating the world effortlessly while reeking like "shrimp on a diaper" and consuming her own urine (via US Magazine).
Kesha is famously known for having a "funky odor," as she revealed to BBC Radio (via US Magazine). "Usually, people around me say, 'You're disgusting!' or, 'Put your pants on!' or ... 'You smell weird, what's that smell?'" she shared. And what exactly was Kesha referring to? "I smell like a hobo," she clarified.
Regarding her habit of drinking pee, Kesha mentioned she had been told it was a healthy practice. "I was trying to be healthy," she explained. However, she has apparently since given up on that practice. What she hasn't given up on, though, is maintaining a foul body odor. In fact, she has even contemplated (whether jokingly or not is unclear) creating her own signature "shrimp on a Faberge diaper" fragrance.
Shailene Woodley ingests clay to detoxify her body from within
In an essay for "Into The Gloss," actress Shailene Woodley shared some of her personal hygiene practices, such as "oil-pulling" and consuming clay.
Oil-pulling, which is intended to support dental hygiene, involves "swishing" either coconut oil or sesame oil in the mouth and then spitting it out. Woodley claims, "it really makes your teeth whiter, because the plaque on your teeth is not water soluble, it's fat-soluble. So the lipids have to dissolve in fats, which is why oil works in your mouth. I prefer sesame oil, but they're both good."
Consuming clay, which Woodley asserts is among the healthiest practices for your body, entails ingesting clay to cleanse teeth and internal systems. "I initially learned about the advantages of eating clay from a taxi driver," Woodley explained, anticipating curiosity about her sources. Indeed, Woodley encouraged being open to the potential of gaining valuable health and hygiene tips from taxi drivers in general.
